It’s Monday morning again. As the alarm goes off to awaken you from your restful sleep, you are immediately confronted with a decision. Will you be a reluctant participant in the week’s events, or will you meet this day with your own agenda and purpose?
Every day confronts us with thousands of events we cannot control. Given that so much of life is unpredictable, It’s natural that we eventually begin to fall into a passive stance. Much like the decaying orbit of a satellite needs an occasional rocket boost to return to its proper place, we must remind ourselves that life is lived best when we make every effort to control what we can.
Passivity prevents us from achieving our goals. In the entrepreneurial community, it is common to talk about adapting to market conditions as pivoting. Sometimes a business will begin to build one product but discover that the market really wants a different but related solution. This sort of pivot is not what I mean when I talk of being passive. Far from it. Adapting your goals and vision to real world circumstances is active and powerful.
What is the difference between passivity and a flexible outlook that produces a positive, disciplined attitude? In both cases, the resulting change of tactics or agenda may be the same. However, the passive person has no clear goal in mind, but is content to wander from tactic to tactic, “pivoting” every time circumstances get tough. In contrast, a positive attitude is underpinned by a clear vision of the future, and every pivot is merely a change in the path we are using to arrive at the predetermined destination.
As your alarm goes off this Monday, do you have your destination in mind? Even if that destination is only a vague glimmer of hope, own it. Spend a few minutes dreaming about what life will be like when you reach it. Is your goal to earn a living from your skills by helping others succeed through your own business? If so, own it. Don’t apologize to yourself or spend even a moment wishing you were like other people.
Your path is not “normal”. Your path is exciting, unknown, filled with opportunity and waiting for decisive, unapologetic action.
